How it works
DST scoring has two halves. The counting stats are a flat weighted sum — sacks, interceptions, fumble recoveries, safeties, blocked kicks, and defensive or special-teams touchdowns each pay a fixed rate. Points allowed (and, in Yahoo Modern, yards allowed) instead score in tiered brackets: a shutout pays the most, and the payout steps down — eventually going negative — as the opposing offense scores more. So the formula is total = points-allowed bracket + yards-allowed bracket (Yahoo only) + Σ (counting stat × value) .
Worked example under Standard: 17 points allowed lands in the 14–20 bracket (+1), and 3 sacks (+3), 2 INTs (+4), 1 fumble recovery (+2), and a defensive TD (+6) bring the total to 16 points. Switch to Yahoo Modern with 315 yards allowed and the 300–349 yardage bracket adds one more (+1) for 17. The brackets cut both ways: give up 35+ points and the PA tier alone is −4 in Standard — a defense can absolutely finish a week underwater.
The three formats
- Standard — the classic default. Points-allowed brackets, no yards-allowed component.
- Yahoo Modern — adds a yards-allowed bracket. Penalizes DSTs that give up garbage-time yards even in low-scoring losses.
- Big-play — upweights sacks, INTs, and TDs. Rewards turnover-heavy defenses over bend-but-don't-break ones.
Points-allowed brackets
Most leagues score points-allowed in tiers: 0 points allowed pays out the most, and the values step down as the opposing offense scores more. The full bracket tables render above with the live row highlighted, and they track common platform bracket conventions — but every platform (and commissioner) tunes these differently, so treat them as house values and check your league's settings.
