Fantasy Football Handcuff Rankings
If the starter sits, who gains the most? Every team's backup running back and tight end, ranked by how far his projection jumps when the starter's share is his to take.
Week 4 (updated Wed Sep 30): if the starter sits and his full share goes to the backup (the upper end), the running backs projected to gain the most half-PPR points per game rest of season are Sione Vaki (behind Jahmyr Gibbs, +10.4), Mike Washington Jr. (behind Ashton Jeanty, +9.9) and Seth McGowan (behind Jonathan Taylor, +9.4).

How the jump is calculated
Nothing here is a separate model. It is the site's own projection — the one behind the weekly rankings and the rest-of-season rankings — run twice for each backup: once as things stand, and once with the starter's share handed to the backups.
- The room. Every player at the position who played in one of his team's last 3 games. The starter is the one with the highest rest-of-season projection; everyone else is a backup. There is no depth-chart feed, so the room is what the 2026 box scores show.
- The vacated share. The starter's share of the team's carries (V), and separately of its targets, is split among the backups in proportion to their own shares (S is theirs combined): his new share = his share × (1 + V ÷ S) capped at the starter's own share, so a backup can step into the starter's role but not past it.
- The projection. Everything else stays as it is: his own efficiency and red-zone rates, his team's volume, and for this week the Vegas line and his injury designation. Rest of season is schedule-neutral with the market prior — Fantasy Football Calculator preseason ADP — at 4 games; this week carries it at 2 games; a backup who went undrafted has no prior, so his jump is the model's own. The jump is the difference between the two runs.
Worked example, straight off the table
Sione Vaki (DET) has 17% of his team's carries; Jahmyr Gibbs has 60%. With no other back in the room, V ÷ S is 3.6. Multiplier: ×3.59 , after the cap.
If Jahmyr Gibbs sits, Sione Vaki goes from 17% → 60% of DET carries and from 4.1 to 14.5 half-PPR points a game rest of season (+10.4). His share is capped at Jahmyr Gibbs's own 60%.
Why the full share. When a starter is ruled out for a single week, the weekly rankings give his same-position teammates 25% of his share, up to ×2 — the amount the 2025 data supports on average, because much of a missing starter's work goes to other positions, a new signing or a committee. This page asks the bigger question a handcuff answers: what the backup is worth if the job is his. So it hands over all of it (α = 1), which makes the “if he sits” numbers the upper end, not the expectation. If a starter is ruled out this week, expect the weekly rankings to show a smaller bump than this page.
What this can't see
The depth chart. There is no depth-chart feed. A backup who hasn't touched the ball this season — a rookie who has been inactive, a practice squad call-up, a free agent signed this week — isn't in the room at all, and a team that would sign a veteran rather than promote its backup looks the same as one that wouldn't.
Role changes. The backup keeps his own efficiency, which was earned in a smaller role, and a back who only catches passes may not inherit the early-down work. Committees split the share in proportion to what each back has been getting; coaches don't always.
How long the starter sits. The rest-of-season number is per game, as if the backup had the role for every remaining game. Multiply it by the games you expect him to have it.
Quarterbacks and receivers aren't ranked. A backup quarterback has no 2026 passing to project from, and a missing receiver's targets spread across receivers, tight ends and backs rather than going to one player.
