How it works
First-down scoring adds a flat bonus every time a player moves the chains. ESPN added it as a league scoring option in 2023, and it has spread quickly because it fixes the oldest complaint about fantasy scoring: a 9-catch, 85-yard day that sustains three drives shouldn’t be worth less than one lucky goal-line plunge. The formula this page applies to every player is:
PPFD points = base season points + (rushing first downs + receiving first downs + passing first downs*) × points per first down
*Passing first downs only apply to the QB view, and only while the “include QB passing first downs” toggle is on. Rushing and receiving first downs always count, for every position.
Base points are 2025 regular-season actuals in your chosen format (standard, half-PPR, or full PPR), so the Δ rank column isolates exactly what the first-down bonus changes. At 0 points per first down the table collapses back to your base rankings — that’s the sanity check, not a bug.
Who rises, and why
First-down scoring rewards volume and chain-movers over touchdown-dependence. Possession receivers who live between the 20s pile up 70–80 receiving first downs a season while a deep threat with the same fantasy total might have half that. Same story for pass-catching running backs: third-down conversions are first downs by definition, so backs who earn passing-down work climb past early-down grinders whose value is concentrated in goal-line touchdowns. Flip on the “Biggest risers” view and the pattern jumps out immediately — the risers are the players whose production sustains drives, and the fallers are the ones whose seasons were built on short scores.
Kickers and team defenses are excluded from this table: first-down data simply doesn’t exist for them, and no mainstream first-down scoring rule touches them anyway. All player data is 2025 regular-season actuals via nflverse.com (CC-BY 4.0).
